چکیده

Introduction Hyperglycemia in critically ill patients has not shown predict poor outcomes in those with preexisting Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Otherwise hyperglycemia in patients without DM has shown poor outcomes and generally this association reflects the severity of the disease. In addition the high level of glycemia can produce deleterious effects and is associated inversely to the survival. Also, It has been shown that insulin has anti-inflammatory effects, and hyperinsulinism can predicts survival in experimental critically ill models. Nevertheless is not known if prediabetic patients (A subgroup of non-diabetic patients that often presents insulin resistance and hyperinsulinism) have an increased risk of stress induced hyperglycemia.

Metformin Treatment in Hyperglycemic Critically Ill Patients: Another Challenge on the Control of Adverse Outcomes

New-onset hyperglycemia in patients admitted to intensive care units increases the risk of morbidity and mortality. Insulin resistance is frequently seen in the treatment of stress-induced hyperglycemia. Metformin, an oral anti-hyperglycemic agent, may introduce a new treatment protocol in critically ill patients with insulin-resistance hyperglycemia. Fifty-one non-diabetic traumatized patients...

Management of critically ill patients with diabetes

Disorders of glucose homeostasis, such as stress-induced hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, are common complications in patients in the intensive care unit. Patients with preexisting diabetes mellitus (DM) are more susceptible to hyperglycemia, as well as a higher risk from glucose overcorrection, that may results in severe hypoglycemia. In critically ill patients with DM, it is recommended to mai...

Stress Induced Hyperglycemia and the Subsequent Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Survivors of Critical Illness

OBJECTIVE Stress induced hyperglycemia occurs in critically ill patients who have normal glucose tolerance following resolution of their acute illness. The objective was to evaluate the association between stress induced hyperglycemia and incident diabetes in survivors of critical illness. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. SETTING All adult patients surviving admission to a public hospital...

Synergism effects of pioglitazone and Urtica dioica extract in streptozotocin-induced nephropathy via attenuation of oxidative stress

Objective(s): Hyperglycemia promotes oxidative stress that plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Diabetic nephropathy (DN). In this study, we investigated the synergism effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Urtica dioica and pioglitazone (PIO) on the prevention of DN in streptozotocin induced-diabetic mice. Materials and Methods: Forty-two mice were divided into six groups as follows: non-...
